Who Will Grow

  • Children needing practice in sound recognition and recall
  • Children struggling with blending sounds into words
  • Children needing a multi-sensory approach (see it, say it, hear it, touch it) to reading
  • Children struggling with breaking words down into phonemes for spelling

How They'll Grow

  • Sharpen phoneme (sound) awareness and use in words
  • Feel encouraged as they build confidence in reading and spelling decodable words
  • Build neuron connections in their brain as they use a multisensory approach in connecting letters to phonemes (and then to words)
  • Develop the reading strategy of using phoneme knowledge to decipher difficult words

Description:

Each card has either a beginning, middle, or ending phoneme (a unit of sound) clearly printed on it to use as a practice for letter/sound connection and/or a game for blending those sounds into words.  Your child will build confidence as they expand their knowledge and gain additional sounds to make even more words.  For some students, these cards will be a great review tool for the sounds that they are learning in the classroom.  Try using the cards as a practice of sounds, a game of blending, or both.  Use them as often as you would like.  This product never gets old, as you can introduce a few sounds at a time (and add more each play) or try a new sensory object to make the activity new and feel fresh.  Enjoy watching your child grow in many different ways with these practice/game cards!

Directions

There are 2 ways to use these cards.  It is recommended to do both parts in the order in which the directions are explained.

Practice Directions:  You will need some kind of texture around your house to use as a sensory object. This could be the couch, a pillow, carpet, or anything else you find.  Show a sound card, have your child say the sound and then as they say ‘the (letter name) says (the letter sound)’, have them make those letter(s) on the sensory object.  It is recommended to watch the demonstration video to make sure you are saying and teaching the sounds correctly.

Game Directions:  Separate all phoneme cards into three groups, having a beginning sound pile, a middle sound pile, and an ending sound pile.  Place all three piles face down.  Have your student flip a card over from each pile (while saying that sound as he/she flips it over) and then slide his/her finger under the word as he puts the word together and says the word.  If the 3 cards make a real word, have your student write the word in his/her word study notebook, and push that word to the side.  If the 3 cards make a nonsense word (not real), have your child flip the cards back over and shuffle them back into the appropriate piles. If they have 2 cards that make a word (not needing one of the cards), that word counts. Ex: st-ay

You can make this a game by taking turns flipping cards to make words.  If the player makes a real word and writes it, he/she gets a point.  Keep going until all cards are either made into words at the side or ‘dead’ by not having anything left in piles that make words.
